The death of an Empire
09.29.04 (6:23 pm)   [edit]

"In A.D. 9, a traitor from the Roman military named Arminius led an army of barbarians who trapped, and then ferociously butchered, three entire Roman legions. The 20,000 soldiers who were cut down represented a quarter of the Roman army stationed north of the Alps. It was a blow from which the empire never recovered."

And so reads the insert flap of archaeologist and historian Peter S. Wells'  book: "The Battle That Stopped Rome." I highly recommend this read if you get the chance. It reminds us that no matter how powerful an empire is, one significant blow can seriously diminish the spirit and morale of an entire civilization.

C.S. Lewis
09.28.04 (2:56 pm)   [edit]

C.S. Lewis once wrote: "I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else."

Such impact did religion have upon Mr. Lewis, that he experienced his life, and work, through it and by it. Now there are many religions throughout the world, some people worship a god, some many gods, and still some none at all, yet what a person believes or thinks belongs uniquely to him or her, and should not be questioned by anyone else. Who is to say who is right or wrong, but the force which governs the universe?

President Bush flipflops?
09.27.04 (4:51 pm)   [edit]

Davy Crockett's take on a president changing his spiel mid-stream:

"Although our great man at the head of the nation, has changed his course, I will not change mine. I would rather be politically dead than hypocritically immortalized...I shall insist upon it that I am still a Jackson man, but General Jackson is not; he has become a Van Buren man."

Frontier uprising!
09.27.04 (4:49 pm)   [edit]
I am Davy Crockett, welcome to my blog. The frontier spirit of America is back and I am their spokesman. Guided by the light and common sense of the decent man, I am here to show you the way of righteousness and civility.
